Slatter Estates Surfaces has been part of S&C Slatter since the company was founded, but operated as a small section within the wider business named ‘Surfacing & Civils’, working for S&C Slatter and White Horse Contractors offering surfacing solutions for their larger projects alongside their own scope of projects.

In the ever-evolving industry and expanding company, we are excited to announce that the current ‘Surfacing & Civils’ team, lead by Simon Bradbury, is becoming a stand-alone specialist brand, dedicated to surfacing solutions for car parks, estate roads, footpaths and driveways for clients across the country. We are delighted to announce that S&C Slatter has been selected to deliver the construction of a ‘super-size’ and one full-size 3G Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) in Portsmouth.

The project will provide local communities with a much sought-after complex of high-quality football facilities totalling 17,500m2, bringing with it a wealth of benefits to the area. This project is part of our commitment to provide great value sports facilities for local communities, and we’re looking forward to transforming this site into an enjoyable place for football teams of all ages, helping them make the most of their training and match-day experience.

"Before" image of the community pitches in Portsmouth before S&C Slatter started works on one 'Supersize' and one Full-size AGP Football Pitch

We look forward to working closely with the team at Portsmouth City Council to deliver this much-anticipated facility for the local community.
This project is a fantastic opportunity for us to deliver a specially designed, ‘super-size’ 10,080m2 AGP (2,660m2bigger than a standard size football pitch) and one 7,420m2 full size AGP, showcasing our skills and expertise in delivering high-quality artificial grass pitches. The new complex will provide much-needed extra capacity for grassroots and elite teams in the city.

“We will be delivering an innovative and bespoke pitch marking solution specifically to provide for 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11-a-side games. The versatile and configurable pitch markings provide 23 layouts within the ‘supersize’ pitch and 13 within the full-size pitch, supporting all ages and abilities.”John Fisher, Contracts Manager

With the designated pitches laid-out for all ages, this means that more games can be played concurrently, clubs can increase their capacity and give the opportunity for more children to join football teams and take up competitive and recreational sport. This will allow for optimum use of the facility, higher user numbers and a larger revenue generation for the City Council.

Upon commencement, it will take our team approximately 26 weeks to construct the pitches, collaborating with LST Projects who are completing construction on a brand-new Pavilion on site, complete with changing facilities, bathrooms, and a clubroom. Our teams will work diligently to complete the works to high standards, on time and within budget.

Portsmouth is home to a large number of recreational facilities, including several football pitches, tennis courts and golf courses. However, there is currently no artificial grass pitch of this size in the city dedicated to supporting grassroots and elite football. Once complete, the new facility will provide much-needed additional capacity for local sports teams and clubs, as well as providing a surface that can be used year-round. The pitches will be built to the highest standards, using the latest artificial grass technology, and designed to be fully accessible, with easy access for disabled users.

S&C Slatter are proud to be creating more outstanding pitches for grassroots football and we are looking forward to this project coming to life and delivering a big impact for the local clubs and teams.

White Horse Contractors

With over 60 years of experience, White Horse Contractors, a Slatter Group company, is a leading provider of natural and hybrid sports turf pitches, pitch renovations, land drainage and water engineering.

We look forward to welcoming you to Stand F185 for complimentary drinks – remember to submit your question for a chance to win one of three magnums of Champagne!

S&C Slatter is delighted to confirm the acquisition of White Horse Contractors Limited which becomes a member of The Slatter Group.

White Horse Contractors was established in 1957 by Arnold Binning. Since then it has grown into one of the leading providers of natural turf sports facilities, land drainage, water engineering, landscaping and civil engineering projects. It has gained a first-class reputation for quality and service in these sectors.

As a well-established family business, S&C Slatter are acknowledged as one of the Country’s foremost experts in the design and construction of sports facilities including artificial and natural pitches, multi-use games areas (MUGAs), hard and soft landscaping. The Surfacing & Civils division is also very successful in securing an increasing share in the infrastructure sector – car parks, roadways, hard standings.

White Horse Contractors will operate from the Group Head Office in Enborne, Newbury as an autonomous business under the guidance of newly appointed Managing Director David Smith and Technical Director James Welsh.

With this addition, The Slatter Group offers an unrivalled scope of services to a broad reach of clients within the sports grounds, amenity, leisure, agricultural and equestrian sectors. The knowledge base and resource that White Horse Contractors brings to the Group complements perfectly the skills, technology and experience in artificial surfacing, civil engineering and project development accessible from the existing specialist divisions of S&C Slatter.

David Slatter, who oversees the operations of all Group companies, comments:

“When I first took over the business from my Father, we provided sub-contract services for White Horse Contractors on their bigger projects. For me they were always the ‘Gold standard’ which I was aiming to emulate and to this end I saw a perfect opportunity to approach the Directors of White Horse Contractors. To be able to bring their expertise and resource to our family company is a dream come true for me. The depths of services, skills and knowledge that we can now offer our clients in a one stop shop is industry leading.”

James Binning is the third generation of the Binning family to chair White Horse Contractors and says:

“I’m delighted that we have found another family business which can take White Horse Contractors to new heights and that shares our company ethos and family values. Many of our staff have worked with us for decades and it is important to us that the business continues to be run in the same style as it has for the last 60 years.”

However, the Binning family association with the industry will not cease as White Horse Contractors’ workshop and plant will continue to grow and thrive under a new name, Muddy Plant Hire Ltd, providing specialist plant hire services to The Slatter Group and the industry at large.

We’re delighted that the Harlequins Foundation will be joining us at our Rugby Turf Workshop on 24th January 2019. Their Manager Paul Wilson will be giving a special presentation of the wonderful work the Foundation does in the rugby community to promote health & wellbeing.

Paul has been with the Harlequins Foundation since 2015, co-ordinating and managing delivery of the Harlequins Foundation programmes.

A former rugby player, Paul very much ‘leads from the front’ and in 2017 took on the challenge of the London Marathon to raise funds for the Harlequins Foundation’s mental health campaign.

Movember Partnership
This September The Movember Foundation, Harlequins Foundation and Harlequin FC announced a long-term partnership that will see them team up for a joint initiative committed to help rugby fans, and the wider community,

The partnership is focussing on improving awareness of men’s health issues during the season as well as raising funds to deliver a mental health and wellbeing project in the 2019/20 season aimed at reducing self-harm and suicide amongst young men.

The partnership brings together a joint ambition between the Club and the Foundations to address the issues around men’s health and provide information and guidance on what to do when health suffers. They are planning several campaigns, focused both on awareness and fundraising, and during the partnership the funds raised will be invested into projects aimed at parents, coaches and young men; all delivered through the Harlequins Foundation.

That’s Leisure News the in-house newsletter of Willmott Dixon, one of the largest construction companies in the UK. Featured is a case study of the fabulous Elmbridge Xcel Sports Complex on which we worked as specialist provider of the outdoor sports facilities and support infrastructure. Xcel is acknowledged as one of Surrey’s leading sports venues and very much a model of how to successfully create and deliver a multi-asset community development.

Continuous Professional Development session for Willmott Dixon

Our partnership relationship with Willmott Dixon looks to achieve continuous improvement in service performance and delivery, and commits to collaborative working during all stages of the construction process.

This is further illustrated by a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) session we recently presented for key team members of Willmott Dixon. The objective was to impart and share technical knowledge of key elements of the sports construction process and provide Information on our five service divisions. Some twenty executives representing a wide range of responsibilities attended and listened to panel of presenters led by S&C Slatter Commercial Director Jason Douglass.

Both Willmott Dixon and S&C Slatter recognise and support the benefits to be accrued of early supply chain involvement in project development..

The new sports facilities officially opened recently at Willowbrook are an impressive confirmation of Eton College’s commitment to excellence in all aspects school life. A pavilion with a striking contemporary design and presence is very much the focal point as it looks out on the superb new hockey pitches built by S&C Slatter.

Two full size and one training pitch have been completed to the FIH National Performance Standard creating a significant resource for the game which is enjoyed by some seventeen teams at Eton. Obviously S&C Slatter’s status as an FIH Certified Field Builder and its holistic engineering skills were important in pursuing and delivering a build programme tasked with producing an end product of the highest order.

The company’s relationship with manufacturer partner, and FIH Preferred Producer, FieldTurf, also ensured provision of a superb playing surface – the sand-dressed Hockey Gold Elite.

However, the process driver was very much embracing and implementing a highly detailed project plan with finite attention to detail in both pre-build planning and on-site management. Our Pre-Construction Manager Ben O’Connor and Contracts Manager Peter Fowler were key team leaders and they were delighted when independent auditors visited the site during works and scored us maximum marks for quality management system ISO 9001: 2015 and health & safety compliance.

When visiting you’ll even be impressed by the parking arrangements. Its not often that a car park goes beyond the purely practical but that’s the case at Willowbrook. Here the design and layout, including the access roadway and paths, show an eye-pleasing mix of angles, curves, colours and textures which adds visual interest and creates a sense of space. Even the Illuminated bollards set within the borders are softened by the imaginative use of plants such as ornamental grasses.

This type of feature is very much a specialism of the company’s Slatter Surfacing & Civils division. In addition to Eton it has earlier this year completed major car park schemes for independent school clients such as Roedean, Kingshott and The John Lyon School.

The Willowbrook project once again confirms the position of S&C Slatter as the Country’s principal provider of multi-asset sports and leisure facilities.
