Hockey Pitch Construction at Down Grange Sports Complex

Sand Dressed Artificial Turf Hockey Pitch

Installation of new in-situ bound shock pad systems and drainage

Perimeter fencing, floodlighting and sports equipment

S&C Slatter were proud to undertake hockey pitch construction on behalf of Basingstoke & Deane Council and Basingstoke Hockey Club.

An extensive facility in Basingstoke, Down Grange Sports Complex features an array of sports facilities for athletics, hockey, football, rugby, shooting and croquet.

The complex is home to a number of sports teams within the area, including Basingstoke Hockey Club, a nearly 500-strong club with six men’s teams and seven ladies teams, whose first team plays in the National League.

The success and popularity of the club meant that they were fast outgrowing the single sand-dressed hockey pitch available at Down Grange. Working with Basingstoke Borough Council, the Club selected S&C Slatter to construct a new sand-dressed artificial turf hockey pitch on site, adjacent to their existing pitch.

S&C Slatter worked closely with the council and club to ensure that the chosen surface would would also be suitable for football and rugby, given that such a variety of sports are played on site.

After undertaking the initial excavation and groundworks to remove the topsoil, pitch drainage was implemented alongside a dynamic stone and macadam base. This was followed by the installation of an in-situ rubber shock pad and FieldTurf Hockey Gold Elite artificial turf. The project was completed with the the installation of perimeter fencing, floodlighting, team shelters and hockey equipment.

The pitch was handed over in January 2020 and has already received attention from England Hockey highlighting the club’s fundraising efforts for inspiration on social media!

Slatters have been a pleasure to work with and we’re continuing to talk with them about some of our other plans in and around Coventry and Warwickshire. They’ve made this so seamless and easy, everything has been on track and on the timeline, and it has been project managed exceptionally. I’d recommend them to anyone who is considering a project like this.

For Jon Holloway, the driving force behind the cutting-edge facility at Foundation Park, Swindon Town FC Community Foundation’s new artificial turf pitch and pavilion has been a dream 25 years in the making.

Nestled alongside Swindon Town FC’s stadium, the £2.4m facility was built to enable Swindon Town FC’s Community Trust and Swindon Harriers Athletics Club to enhance the projects and programmes enjoyed by thousands of participants in the community.

Prior to introducing the brand new FieldTurf synthetic turf, S&C Slatter’s refurbishment technicians released, uplifted and removed from site the existing surfacing, shock pads and fencing systems before levelling the existing pitch base.

A new artificial turf system was then installed, FieldTurf 360 XL, offering superior natural grass aesthetics and exceptionally durable whilst remaining player friendly. The project was completed with 3m perimeter fencing and floodlighting to ensure the pitch can truly serve the community at any time of year!

Since Clive and I first started almost 25 years ago, it had been a long-term ambition to build a state-of-the-art community facility in the heart of Swindon, and we can finally say that the Foundation has achieved it.

It excites me to think what the future will produce, when we consider what we have managed to achieve from our previous offices. Already we’ve been approached to host two national schools’ tournaments where teams from all over the country will come and compete at Foundation Park for a place in the grand-final at Wembley.
