Case Study: Natural Looking Play Areas at Burhill Primary School

Artificial Grass Play Lawns

Burhill Primary, Nursery & Children’s Centre in Hersham looks to provide a uniquely broad, balanced and creative curriculum, so that children enjoy learning. Physical activity is also a principal element of the school’s approach and commitment to children’s well-being, and it strongly believes in the principle of ‘healthy body, healthy mind’.

Therefore, the appearance and performance of outdoor play and activity environment is seen as extremely important and this is reflected in the school’s investment in new surfacing systems. Some 440m2 of the grounds have been converted to artificial grass in an inclusive project completed by S&C Slatter’s specialist play installation team. The works featured removing the existing ground cover to enable a suitably graded aggregate sub-base to be constructed. This was edged around the perimeter with a tantalised timber detail to retain the foundation and provide a fixing point for the artificial grass.

Finesse artificial grass was chosen as the new surface because of its perfect combination of practicality and aesthetics. It features a two-tone green 26mm artificial pile mixed with a small amount of brown fibre to produce the visual appearance of a well-maintained natural lawn.
