Case Study: MUGA Construction at Westminster Cathedral Choir School

Sand-dressed Artificial Turf for Multi-use Games

Westminster Cathedral Choir School is an academically-selective, Roman Catholic preparatory school for boys, situated within an impressive setting in Central London. The Tatler Schools Guide 2016 describes the curriculum as ‘brilliantly original’.

S&C Slatter worked with the School to produce creative yet practical proposals for the refurbishment of the existing tarmacadam playground into a genuine multi-use sports and play facility.

Central to the plan was the installation of a high performance 18mm sand-dressed artificial sports pitch to the central area, with the surface and pre-fabricated shock pad being laid directly over the prepared tarmac. Additionally, in order to maximise the use of available space, the adjacent vehicle access route was treated and coloured with a textured acrylic coating and line marked with a three lane sprint track, and the cricket practice area re-located.

The practice area was provided with a new cricket specific surfacing system and a special cage and netting structure which folds against a rear wall to a depth of around a metre for storage.
